A convenience store clerk was wrapping up a quiet afternoon shift when he noticed a brand-new smartphone sitting entirely forgotten on the front checkout counter.
Hoping to track down the owner before they walked too far away, the clerk unlocked the screen, scrolled through the saved contacts list, stopped at the name “Mom,” and pressed call.
An older woman answered on the second ring. The clerk politely explained, “Hello, ma’am! I’m an employee at the convenience store down the street. A young man just left his cell phone right here on our counter, and I wanted to let you know so you could contact him.”
“Oh, bless your heart!” the mother replied with immense relief. “Don’t you worry about a single thing, young man. I know exactly where he is right now. I’ll take care of it immediately!”
The clerk hung up, feeling great about doing his good deed for the day, and placed the phone safely under the register.
Barely two minutes later, the cell phone began ringing loudly.
The clerk looked down at the flashing screen. The caller ID read: “Mom.”
He picked it up, thoroughly confused. “Hello?”
The mother’s loud, confident voice boomed through the speaker:
“Martin! Thank goodness you picked up! Listen to me, you dummy—the clerk just called me and said you left your cell phone at the convenience store!”
