The Heavy Cost of a Free Ride

A donkey shuffled home from the market, buckling under a crushing load of goods. Beside him trotted a horse, carrying absolutely nothing.

Halfway through the journey, the donkey’s legs began to tremble. “Please,” he gasped, “help me share this weight before I collapse.”

The horse just flicked his ears and walked on.

As the road turned steeply uphill, the donkey pleaded twice more, desperate for relief. On the final attempt, the horse scoffed, “Fine, I’ll help. You keep carrying the bags, and I’ll do the groaning and heavy breathing for you.”

A few steps later, the donkey’s legs gave out entirely. He collapsed into the dust and could not get back up.

With no other choice, the farmer unloaded every single bag, bundle, and crate from the fallen donkey and piled them onto the horse.

For the rest of the journey, the donkey walked ahead, completely free—while the horse stumbled behind, groaning and panting under a burden twice as heavy as the one he had refused to share.

The Lesson: > Never ignore a cry for help just because the burden isn’t on your back yet. Refusing to share a little weight today often means carrying the entire load tomorrow.
