Back in 7th grade, I kept asking my English teacher strange questions.
One day I asked, “Why don’t we pronounce the H in words like hour and honor?”
She smiled and said, “We don’t ignore it. It’s called a silent letter.”
I was still confused.
At lunch, she handed me her packed meal and said, “Please heat my lunch in the cafeteria.”
A few minutes later, I returned with the empty lunch box.
She stared at me. “What happened? I told you to heat my food!”
I smiled and replied,
“I thought ‘heat’ was silent… so I ate it!”
Moral: Be very careful when teaching English to hungry students.
