Rosie O’Donnell mercilessly mocked after fleeing the US

In recent months, a growing number of celebrities have either left the United States or announced their plans to do so. Among them is actress and comedian Rosie O’Donnell, who has opened up about her decision to move to Ireland and start anew.

Why Rosie O’Donnell moved from US

Rosie O’Donnell, well known for hosting The Rosie O’Donnell Show and her tenure on The View, has officially left the U.S. The outspoken comedian and longtime critic of Donald Trump explained that she moved to Ireland following his victory over Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

Having publicly feuded with Trump since 2006, O’Donnell confirmed that she departed the U.S. on January 15—just days before his inauguration. She is now settling into her new life in Ireland and has begun the process of obtaining Irish citizenship, citing her grandparents’ roots on the island.

She made the move with her 12-year-old daughter, Dakota—who goes by the nickname Clay—and has stated that she will only return to the U.S. when equal rights are secured for all citizens.

O’Donnell shares Dakota with her late ex-wife, Michelle Rounds. Her departure follows similar announcements from other celebrities, including Ellen DeGeneres, who also recently bid farewell to the U.S.

Inside her feud with Donald Trump

O’Donnell’s decision to leave isn’t entirely unexpected, given her long-standing animosity with Donald Trump. Their clashes date back to 2006, when O’Donnell criticized Trump on The View for being too forgiving of Miss USA winner Tara Conner, who was accused of drug use and other misconduct.

Trump retaliated by calling O’Donnell a “real loser,” igniting a public feud that escalated over the years. In 2014, O’Donnell described Trump’s relentless attacks as “the worst b.u.l.l.ying” she had ever endured. During his presidency, she frequently voiced her disdain for his administration, even joking in a 2017 interview with Seth Meyers that she spent the majority of her time tweeting criticisms of him.

Trump further fueled their feud during a 2015 Republican debate when asked about his derogatory remarks toward women. He infamously responded, “Only Rosie O’Donnell,” prompting laughter from the audience.

‘Poor Ireland’ vs. ‘I hope you find peace’

Although O’Donnell has called her experience in Ireland “wonderful” and praised the warm welcome she has received, reactions to her relocation have been divided.

Critics took to social media to mock her departure, with one commenter writing, “Poor Ireland,” while another remarked, “Glad she kept her promise! May her friends follow.”

Others went further, questioning her commitment to leaving. “I feel bad for Ireland, but good for the States… However, if she is serious, she needs to rescind her American citizenship.”

One person sarcastically thanked her for leaving, writing, “THANK YOU, ROSIE!!! BEST GIFT TO US WHO LOVE OUR COUNTRY!!!”

However, O’Donnell also received an outpouring of support. One fan reassured her, “I absolutely loved Ireland. I hope you find your peace there.”

Others expressed their own frustration with the state of the U.S.: “I don’t blame her. If I could, I’d do the same thing! I’m beyond ashamed of my country and fearful of what’s to come.”

Another person voiced concern, saying, “Please don’t forget us. We can’t leave.”

Some were simply stunned by the situation. “I can’t believe we live in a world where Rosie O’Donnell has to flee from America for safety.”

Regardless of public opinion, O’Donnell’s relocation has sparked widespread discussion. What are your thoughts on her decision? Share your perspective in the comments.
