As members of the Royal Family, it’s no secret that the Prince and Princess of Wales’ children enjoy a variety of benefits, including access to events.
Of course, Wimbledon, one of the year’s major sporting events, is no exception.
On Sunday (13 July), Prince William and Kate Middleton accompanied their two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, to see the men’s singles final.
In a tense battle on the last day of the tennis event, Jannik Sinner defeated incumbent champion Carlos Alcaraz to win his first Wimbledon championship.
And the royals watched the big game from the best seats in the house, the coveted Royal Box.
The box is one of the most premium, invite-only seating places in sports, and only select individuals are permitted to sit there.
Since 1922, the renowned suite, which has 74 seats, has entertained Wimbledon’s friends and guests.
In addition to royals, many famous faces have been on the box over the years, with Olivia Rodrigo, David Beckham, and Hugh Grant among the most notable this year.
According to the Wimbledon website, the invitees include “British and overseas Royal Families, heads of government, people from the world of tennis, commercial partners, British armed forces, prominent media organisations, supporters of British tennis, and other walks of life.”
And those who make it inside the special box must adhere to a litany of stringent restrictions and regulations, regardless of how famous they are.
The most notable rule is the dress code, which has caught many celebrities out over the years, including Lewis Hamilton and even Meghan Markle.
Guests are expected to wear a jacket and tie or a full suit, while women have to follow a ‘smart attire’ dress-code.
The official website adds: “Ladies are asked not to wear hats, as they tend to obscure the vision of those seated behind them.”
In addition, children are normally not permitted to sit in the Royal Box.
The only exception is, of course, royal children, so George and Charlotte were quite entitled to have the best view.
The first time 11-year-old Prince George visited Wimbledon was in 2022, when he was eight, and Charlotte was eight when she made her Wimbledon debut in 2023.
Some royal fans have questioned why the couple’s youngest child, seven-year-old Prince Louis, was not present at the game.
However, some social media users pointed out that it was most likely owing to his age, and that the child may struggle to sit quietly throughout the match.
Since both of the other royal children were eight when they first attended, Louis may simply have to wait until next year.
