President Donald Trump’s recent comments came shortly after he posted a message on social media expressing his well wishes for former President Joe Biden, who is currently undergoing prostate can.cer treatment.
During a press conference on May 19, 2025 — held after he awarded the Medal of Honor to the family of a fallen police officer — Trump questioned why the public had not been informed of Biden’s diagnosis sooner.
“I think it’s actually quite sad,” Trump remarked. “I’m surprised the public wasn’t told much earlier. I mean, to reach stage 9, that takes a long time.”

However, Trump’s reference to “stage 9” was inaccurate, as can.cer stages only go up to stage 4. Biden is battling stage 4 prostate can.cer, which signifies that the disease has advanced and spread beyond the prostate to other areas of the body.

The likely source of the confusion was Biden’s Gleason score of 9 — a medical grading system that measures the aggressiveness of prostate can.cer, rather than the stage of progression.
Biden’s office confirmed that his can.cer is “aggressive” and has already metastasized to his bones.
In the wake of the announcement, Biden posted a photo of himself with former First Lady Jill Biden and their cat, thanking the public for their kindness and support. “Thank you for lifting us up with love and support,” he wrote in the caption.
