An old man and his wife had been married for many years, and whenever they argued, the entire neighborhood knew about it.
Their fights weren’t exactly quiet.
In fact, the neighbors could practically follow the conversation from their living rooms.
Whenever the old man got especially angry, he would shout,
“When I die, I’ll dig my way out of the grave and come back to haunt you for the rest of your life!”
The neighbors were terrified.
The old man, however, absolutely loved it.
He enjoyed watching everyone panic whenever he made his dramatic threat.
Then, one evening, at the grand old age of 98, he finally passed away.
At the funeral, the neighbors gathered around his widow.
They nervously asked,
“Are you sure you’re not afraid he might actually come back to haunt you?”
The widow smiled calmly.
“Not at all.”
The neighbors looked surprised.
“Why not?”
She leaned closer and whispered,
“Let him dig.”
Then she smiled even wider.
“I had him buried upside down.”
The neighbors stared at her.
She shrugged.
“And I know my husband well enough to know…”
“He’ll never stop digging long enough to ask for directions.”
