Despite not holding any elected office, Melania Trump signed an executive order yesterday – adding to her history of notable, symbolic gestures.
Traditionally, executive orders are the president’s domain, with Donald Trump himself having signed numerous controversial measures since returning to the White House.
This time, the First Lady co-signed an order expanding support for the foster care system, alongside her husband. Titled Fostering the Future for American Children and Families, the initiative, led by Melania, directs Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to revamp foster care programs using an annual scorecard to evaluate state performance. The goal is to give foster children better access to education, preparing them for future employment opportunities.

In a press statement, Melania said: “It’s inspiring to see everyone united in support of this initiative. Each of you plays a vital role in shaping our future generations. I thank the cabinet members, Congress, scholarship donors, and organizations who tirelessly advocate for this cause. A special thank you to my husband for prioritizing America’s foster care children. He will soon sign our Fostering the Future Executive Order.”
Though her signature was largely symbolic, Melania has been actively working on the program since 2021.
In May, she made history as the only First Lady to sign a bill into law, adding her name to the Take It Down Act, aimed at combating revenge porn – a move tied to her advocacy work.
Reaction to her recent signing has been mixed. Critics announced that the move was a distraction from controversies surrounding Donald Trump, including Epstein-related emails, while others m0cked her occasional public appearances. Some joked about the White House renovations and the East Wing being unavailable.

Despite criticism, many praised the foster care initiative, calling it “truly inspiring.” It aligns with Melania’s Be Best campaign, which focuses on child welfare and anti-bu:llying.
She concluded: “I hope today’s collaboration sparks lasting nationwide change. I urge leadership from organizations and the private sector to join this effort. Together, we can create a future where today’s foster children grow into tomorrow’s builders of a compassionate and innovative society.”
