Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s life have changed dramatically in recent years. As Harry and Meghan pursue separate business ventures (rumored to be more than a professional split), the couple has purchased a new home in Portugal. The Sussexes’ new European headquarters, after being exiled from Frogmore Cottage by King Charles last year, brings them closer to the Royal Family and allows their children, Archie and Lilibet, to get to know their cousins.
Unfortunately for Archie and Lilibet, their parents refuse to let them travel to the UK due to security concerns. However, one royal expert urges Harry and Meghan to reconsider their decision, stating that their failure to bury the hatchet may have a bad impact on their children’s future connections with the royal family.
Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s ‘professional split’
Despite widespread speculation that Prince Harry and Meghan are living separate lives, PR expert Ed Coram James feels that their decision not to collaborate may have been deliberate.
Coram James told the Mirror that the Sussexes have maintained a “distinct brand as a duo for many years.” However, following the infamous Oprah interview, which sparked a massive public spat with the royals, their brand has become “more toxic” and “commercially untenable.”
Prince Harry & Meghan Markle buy property in Portugal
Neither Harry nor Meghan have commented on the allegations surrounding their purported crumbling marriage. The couple raises their two children, Prince Archie and Lilibet, behind the walls of their $14 million mansion. They also recently made a decision that could result in their children having a relationship with the royal family.
A few weeks ago, it was announced that the Sussexes had purchased a home in Portugal. The home is in Alentejo, just an hour’s drive from the coastal town of Melides, which may have a strategic rationale for its position.
In 2023, just days after Harry’s candid memoir, Spare, was published, King Charles chose to expel his son and daughter-in-law from Frogmore Cottage. At this time, no Royal Family members, except Eugenie and her husband, want anything to do with them.
“Royal reunion awfully long way off,” expert says
In an interview with the Daily Mail, royal critic Richard Fitzwilliams stated that the decision to purchase a residence in that region of Portugal “emphasizes that they still have goodwill” with some members of the Royal Family.
Royal expert brands Archie & Lilibet’s non-existent relationship with the Royal Family “sad”
Fitzwilliams concluded: “It will certainly involve their children and we may see photos of Archie and Lili, in the future, possibly the distant future, we may well see them with Eugenie and Jack and their family. This move advertises that the couples are close. Now we know that Harry and Meghan have a base in Europe, their exile in California is far less distant.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were nervously watching the US election after Donald Trump claimed that he might deport Harry if he lied on his visa application. According to royal analyst Jennie Bond, Donald Trump’s return to the White House may indicate that they would spend more time in Portugal, if not during school holidays.
She noted that while it is “sad” that Archie and Lilibet do not have a relationship with their UK family, spending time with their cousins could change their lives.
Meghan fears Archie and Lilibet will “b.l.a.m.e her” if they don’t get a royal reunion
While Prince Harry and Meghan say that security concerns are the reason they won’t bring their children to the UK, the Duchess is concerned that her children would blame her if they don’t get to know their royal cousins.
Time will tell whether Harry and Meghan will give in and make apologies to the Royal Family, enabling their children to meet Harry’s side of the family. But, as things stand now, it does not appear likely.
