9 devices that you should always unplug if you want to reduce your energy consumption

Electricity bills frequently hide unexpected consumption. It’s likely that we don’t take as much care when removing appliances from the house. Some devices may consume more energy than you think, even when turned off.

What you don’t know, or perhaps know but forget, is that some electrical appliances, even when switched off or in standby mode, consume an average of around 1.6 kilowatts per day in a home. That means between 5% and 10% of the energy costs of more than one family.

Cable decoders:

Devices that offer a television service via cable or satellite have different energy consumption. According to the study, the device with the highest consumption is the one with the “video recorder” mode.

Laptops:

They can consume up to 8.9 watts per hour and can be up to 15.7 W when in standby or sleep mode

Music device:

If the device integrates the radio and remains switched on, consumption rises to 14.4 W.

Desktop computer:

The consumption can increase to 21.1 W in standby mode and if it is switched on without utilities, even if the monitor is switched off, it can consume 73.9 W.

The coffee machine:

When plugged in and not in use, it can consume just over 1w per hour. While the games console: When switched off and left plugged in, it consumes about 1w, but when left in “standby mode”, consumption may rise up to 23.3w.

Television:

LCD screens often use less electricity. Nevertheless, certain models that use cathode ray tubes can use twice as much as the previous model.

Microwave oven:

This appliance multiplies its consumption by up to 8 times when the door is open. The consumption is 3.08 w, but when the door is open it is 25.79 w.

Cordless telephone:

If the telephone has an answering machine, the consumption can be up to 2.9 w per hour.

Mobile phone chargers:

These consume the least. However, you don’t have to leave it plugged in when you’re not charging your mobile phone.

In short, remember to unplug all these devices that you don’t use and it might be better to take a walk before going to bed to check around the house.
